National Safe Boating Week By Lt/C Kira Kaufmann To promote Boating Safety Week, the Ft Lauderdale Power Squadron is offering an Emergency First Response CPR, First Aid, and AED use course on Sunday, May 17, from 9 am to 4 pm at 5225B W Broward Blvd, Plantation, Fl 33317.
This training promotes safety by teaching participants how to respond to life-threatening emergencies and covers injuries or illnesses that are not immediately life threatening.
The course focuses on primary care and on secondary assessment through a combination of knowledge development, skill development and realistic scenario practice to make sure participants have the confidence in their ability to provide care when emergency situations arise. The certification is good for 2 years. Cost includes book, use of barriers, and use of mannequins.
The course cost is $40 for individuals renewing their EFR certification, $50 for USPS members and $70 for non-members. The in-class portion of the course takes about 6 hours and class size is limited to 12. Participants must register and pay in advance to get the book and instructions necessary before the actual class date. There are 2 homework assignments that need to be completed prior to May 17.
On May 17, there will be an academic session to review the book information, a video demonstrating skills, a question and answer session, and a test that must be taken for the certification.
After the academic portion there will be 30 minute lunch break (be sure to bring a lunch or snack). After the break, there will be the hands-on portion to provide practice with CPR, first aid, and AED skills.
